Hundreds of Volusia County residents strapped on their running shoes to support high school athletic departments.
The 7th annual Lighthouse Loop Marathon and 5K took place on Oct. 28. More than 500 runners traveled from different parts of Volusia County, the state and the country to participate. The half marathon kicked off at 7 a.m. on a crisp Sunday morning, followed by the 5K at 10 a.m.
Both routes began in Port Orange near the base of the Dunlawton bridge and directed runners south around the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. The fastest runner completed the 5K in 17 minutes.
The race raised money for 10 public high school athletic departments in Volusia County. The event has raised more than $120,000 over six years.
Children and runners participated in party zone activities after the races. Participants also enjoyed a breakfast buffet, coffee, water, fruit and free massages from Daytona State College students.
