Community comes together for a SERVE Day spruce-up.
School vacation is nearing the end, and the community rallied together Saturday, July 28, to help Port Orange Elementary School get ready for students.
Coffee, water and breakfast treats greeted volunteers to kick off the first ever SERVE Day at Port Orange Elementary. Volunteers came from the Jesus Church but also included school staff, parents, children and community members. The list of projects included painting, moving classrooms, landscaping, and sanding down benches and tables for paint.
"Our mission at Port Orange Elementary is to learn, grow and strive for excellence each day, so the event is a way for all of our community to prepare for a great school year," Principal Tennille Wallace said. "We wanted to embed learning into our spaces, so you'll see things like sight words around campus, ways to reinforce numbers and counting and a lot of the curriculum things that we're always learning and working to reinforce with our students."
