Lady of Hope Knights of Columbus Star Council 8086 donates winter coats to children
On Oct. 25, Our Lady of Hope Knights of Columbus Star Council 8086 distributed 200 winter coats and fleeced hoodies to five local elementary schools.
This program is in conjunction with the national Knights of Columbus “Coats for Kids Program,” which services Holly Hill, Sugar Mill, Turie T. Small, Westside, and So. Daytona elementary schools.
Each year the OLOH Knights of Columbis participates with multiple national and local Knight programs so that children and families can receive the help needed especially during the colder months.
Knight of the Year wears many hats
Our Lady of Hope Knights of Columbus Star Council 8086 honored the 2017-18 Knight of the Year to David Dollieslager during the organization's annual Fall Harvest Dinner Dance on Oct. 20.
As Grand Knight, Dollieslager led the Council to receive Star Council status two years in a row.
Under the Community section of the Knights Faith in Action guidebook, or Helping Hands, he established the Loaves and Fishes Ministry at OLOH. The ministry serves homeless in the area twice a month with food, clothing, toiletries and other personal care items. Dollieslager collects items daily to meet their needs.
He also helps organize the annual Christmas Concert, which is the major fundraiser, and he is the chair for Habitat for Humanity, which which assists the local chapter several times a year.
Dollieslager also is an usher at OLOH, serves as a trustee for the Council and dedicates countless hours helping on all council projects.
Locals celebrate 60 years of marriage
Ben and Sam Ruth were told their marriage will never last, but they proved them wrong. On Nov. 8, the couple, originally from New Jersey, will celebrate 60 years of marriage. Ben is from Morris Township in New Jersey. Ben was a Captain in the Collinsville Fire Department, and he later worked for Otis Elevator, where he retired. Ruth was a housewife. They moved to Port Orange in 1977. After returning to the workforce for a short period, Ben then retired again from Florida Production, and Ruth retired from NASCAR. They have
two children; Ruth "Ed" Jacobs and Ben Jr., or Maureen. They also have six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
