Storytellers to look back on Florida's role in the cattle industry

Wayne Sims and Jane Sims will bring 19th century Florida to life with stories of the cattle barons, ranchers and cow hunters who forged Florida's cattle industry.

The Sims are humorists, historians and tandem storytellers. Their presentation will focus on the challenge and romance of cowmen who traveled across Florida's prairies and swamps to find, herd and drive cattle to market.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle.

Counseling and Wellness Center ribbon cutting

Lakeside Counseling and Wellness Center is inviting the public to a ribbon cutting for a new facility at 900 N. Swallowtail Drive, Unit 105. 

The open house will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22 and 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23.

Runners and walkers invited to evening workout session

Runners and walkers alike can continue to keep those New Year's resolution's during the Monday, Feb. 19, 5K evening group walk and run. The event, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., is hosted by The Running Elements and will take place at 5521 S. Williamson Blvd, Unit 440.

Art comes to the park in Port Orange

Families can have a chance to get out and get crafty during the All Children's February Art in the Park: Jasper Johns event at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19. 

The event, hosted by Hannie's Mobile Art Studio, will be held at the All Childrens Park, 5959 Spruce Creek Rd. 

Participants are asked to RSVP with the number of students participating. Most classes are geared toward children ages four and up, but small children can participate on their own or with the help of a parent. 

Children will be able to learn about art history, different mediums and how to create an art portfolio.

Cycling and desserts come together during donut ride

Cyclists can get a workout and satisfy any sweet tooth during the Hub Cycling's Tuesday, Feb. 20, Donut Ride. The 27-mile loop will begin at 3751 S Clyde Morris Blvd, Unit 5, and provide stops for donuts along the way.

Local docent to speak about Port Orange history 

The Port Orange Historical Trust will have a guest speaker 2 p.m. on Saturday, Fe. 17, in the museum at 740 Commonwealth Blvd.    John Mann, docent from Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, will speak about the historical connection between Port Orange and Ponce Inlet when it was called Orange Port. 

Mann also talk about the 1887 Lighthouse. Attendees are encouraged to discuss anything related to Port Orange.
